I love having special one on one time with my daughter. From the time she was small we had our little dates – even before she knew what we were doing.
As she got older, she caught on and looked forward to our Friday night girl’s nights. The dates were simple. We would get pizza or Happy Meals, choose a movie and have our very own slumber party in the living room.
I think the act of me taking the time to do things with my daughter has created some valuable equity in our mother daughter relationship. The return I’ve gotten from what started out as living room date nights has been immeasurable. Now as a nearly 15-year-old girl she still wants to spend time with me. She asks me for advice. She tells me things- deep things. I love it. I have credibility with her. I can’t put a price tag on that.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m not the Martha Stewart of moms or anything. There are days when we butt heads and avoid each other, and times I would rather cuddle up with a book than give anyone the time of day. But those moments of strife are short lived because of that equity we’ve built.
Five Fun Mother Daughter Dates
-
Dinner and a movie date: This can spin many ways. You could see a movie at the theater, watch one you already own, rent one or Netflix it. Dinner could be at a restaurant, take out or a fun new recipe you both want to try.
-
Pedicure date: Nail salons have become nearly as popular as Starbucks where we live. Just last weekend I got one for $20. If your daughter is anything like mine, she will love going for a mother daughter pedicure. Get coffee first!
-
Ice cream date: We love going out to ice cream. Sometimes we go to Baskin Robbins, and sometimes we go to Coldstone. She loves cake batter. Me? I’m a die-hard chocolate and peanut butter girl. But, you can’t go wrong with chocolate almond, either.
-
Coffee date: We’ve never gone and sat down in a coffee shop, but it is fun when you’re out and about to stop at your favorite coffee stand. I’ve gotten in the habit of making my daughter a cup of hot chocolate and taking it in the car with me when I pick her up from school. She enjoys her hot chocolate while I sip my coffee or tea on the drive home.
-
Slumber party at a hotel: We’ve only done this a few times, but it is fun. We pack our suitcases (don’t forget your swim suit for the pool and hot tub), ordered pizza or room service, stay up late watching movies (even though I normally fall asleep by 10:30), sleep in and have breakfast. Your hotel doesn’t need to be a five star, and you can go economical by bringing snacks and drinks from home. You could even make it a double date with another mom and daughter, making the room even cheaper.
What about you? Do you and your daughter go on dates? What do you do?
